Hard Turning Workshop and CI Project Competition

4 December, 2024

At IGW, part of the dynamic BMT Group, we're all about precision machining and relentless improvement. The BMT Group is a powerhouse with divisions like VCST (Automotive), BMT Aerospace (Aerospace), OMCO (Glass Moulds), and ourselves; IGW. Each division brings its own expertise to the table but shares a unified commitment to excellence in precision machining. This shared focus allows us to tap into a wealth of knowledge across our global operations. One example of how knowledge is shared in our group, was the hard-turning workshop set up by VCST for IGW and BMT Aerospace.

Workshop

To elevate our hard-turning processes without each plant reinventing the wheel, we launched an innovative cross-division and cross-plant workshop. This initiative was designed to harness internal expertise, streamlining improvements across our network. Recognizing that some divisions naturally excel in certain technologies due to industry demands, we set our sights on mastering hard turning for small gearwheels.

VCST led the charge in organizing this technical workshop, drawing from their vast automotive experience. They teamed up with Sumitomo Tools—who generously provided complimentary training—to deliver an enriching experience for multiple plants and divisions:

  • IGW Romania
  • IGW India
  • IGW China
  • BMTA Romania
  • BMTA USA
  • VCST Belgium (Organizer)
  • Sumitomo Tools Romania and Belgium (Hard Turning Tool Supplier & Trainer)

Hosted by IGW Romania over four engaging days, the workshop combined theoretical insights with hands-on sessions. Participants were thrilled with:

  • A deep dive into cutting tools and inserts theory.
  • Valuable training tailored for young graduates aiming to become process specialists.
  • Open discussions offering diverse perspectives across divisions.
  • Practical sessions adding unique dimensions beyond typical trainings.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting enhancing understanding of critical factors.

CI Competition

While learning flourished during the workshop, its true impact comes through application. To ensure these newfound skills got to be implemented in our workflow, IGW launched a Continuous Improvement (CI) competition among participating plants post-workshop. Each plant had three months to bring a CI project to life using their fresh insights.

A huge round of applause goes out to the team from IGW India, Pune for clinching victory! Their outstanding application of workshop learnings truly distinguished them—a remarkable achievement deserving of celebration!
